Quit Making Excuses

by Sherita Thompson
Incline not my heart to evil words; to make
excuses in sins. With men that work iniquity:
and I will not communicate with the choicest
of them.”
 -Psalm 141:4

With everything that needs to be done to keep the children in line and the house clean and running like a well-oiled machine, are we being as productive as we ought to be? Have we made plans in the past and even set things in motion, only to turn around and apply the brakes for one unjustifiable reason or another without finishing what we started?

Do we dare to admit that the last several years of our lives have slipped by without much notice and that some of the goals, dreams, and plans we may have had have all faded into the distance probably because we were so consumed by the demands of wifehood and motherhood?

We murmur that we’re too busy, we don’t have enough time, we’re too tired, we’re way too old, we’re not motivated enough, we’re too depressed, we’re not thin enough or healthy enough or strong enough or smart enough, and we have an excuse for just about everything. While we’re busy coming up with reasons not to do certain things, it’s amazing how quickly time passes by and unless we’re purposely putting things in place to ensure that we accomplish our goals and fulfill the Father’s plans for our lives, we too will find ourselves in this predicament of living an unfulfilled life. Yes, taking care of our children and husbands should be among our top priorities, but let us not forget what

Matthew 6:33 says about how imperative it is for us as noble stewards to “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteous,” so as we anticipate that all that we desire and pray for according to His will “will be added unto us, Psalm 90:12 encourages us to ask Father God to  teach us to
number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

How sobering! If there is anyone who can help us to live a more effective, purposeful life, it is the One who has created us for His good pleasure. Therefore, going forward, let us quit making excuses! It is time to take steps to do what we need to do to be a better version of our current selves. Daily, let us purpose to get a healthy dose of exercise, sunshine, and water, take much better care of ourselves, get proper nutrition and rest, work on trusting in our Creator more, always be temperate in all we do, and ever mindful of our environment and the influence it exerts upon us.

Prayer:
Woman of God, may you be blessed as you run your race with patience, fervor, and diligence!
May the Lord strengthen you and give you the courage to finish the race that you have started.
If ever in doubt remember “He who has began a good work in you will carry it on to completion
until the day of Christ Jesus.”

I have this battle in my mind so much! I feel like I am constantly on the go that when I do have time to really put my energy somewhere that is vital, I am still looking for things to do where in the natural people can see, like clean my home to every detail, work on my blog, and/or run errands but my head tells me to stop and give my time to God. I am doing my best to listen to it and just stop making excuses. Thank you for this reminder today.

Hi Carmen, thanks for sharing your experience with us. It is indeed a constant battle with the spirit and flesh. We know the right thing to do but our flesh often time pulls us in the direction of the world. But thank God, we have a Father who is strong when we are weak which gives us the victory before we even began.

Such a good message! We are saying we’re too busy and sometimes it’s because we say yes to all the wrong or many things. The Lord has been teaching me that busyness is okay if I’m more about my Father’s business than my own agenda!

Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your experience with us. This was a struggle for me for a very long time and even though I still have a long way to go, I am grateful for where God has taken me from and even more excited for where He is taking me.
