Time to Move

by Sherita Thompson
will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”11 (Psalm 32:8)

I don’t know about you, but I am not a huge fan of moving, primarily because when I assess the timing involved, and what I need to do to make the move a reality, I am sometimes overwhelmed. The thought of being in a new location, meeting new people, learning about the culture of somewhere I have never been before, all makes me excited and look forward to the change. However, the process of getting there is what’s daunting and unwelcome.

Why do people move anyway? In many instances, it’s due to a job relocation or some life event. For the most part, people are content to stay where they are, for as long as they possibly can.

As I thought about the moving process several days ago, I remembered how often I have told myself and others that change can be a good thing, especially because we don’t know what lies ahead of us. One thing I do know is that our Heavenly Father has amazing plans for our lives, and reminds us of that when He declared: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11)

So instead of getting agitated about the prospect of moving, perhaps you can just propose viable solutions to any perceived challenges you see in the process, such as getting assistance with packing and unpacking, as opposed to doing it all on my own. Otherwise, start packing sooner, if time permits.

I hate to admit it, but I still live out of boxes from the last move we made almost four years ago. It’s unbelievable, I know, but having moved three times in five years, I have come to realize that it’s really time to clear the clutter, downsize, and live more simply. As I wrote the words of the previous sentence, I could hear the Spirit of the Lord say quite clearly to me that that’s what I need to do in my spiritual journey through life.

Our Heavenly Father is calling us to move from one place to another in our experience with Him, and sometimes, because we are so comfortable and detest moving, the idea of change is daunting and unwelcome. However, He reminds us yet again in His Word, that He will instruct and teach us in the way we should go. To me, that means He’s got all the particular details of the journey worked out, and all I really need to do is trust Him and let Him take care of things.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we surrender our stubborn will to You today. We realize that You have a great work to do in our hearts, and we desperately ask for Your help to make us more open to the opportunities and blessings You bring our way. We don’t fully understand You, but we really appreciate Your Word, which helps us to see You more clearly at work in our lives. May we learn to follow Your Divine instructions, and embrace change, believing all the while that You have our best interest at heart and are guiding us each step of the way, we humbly pray. Amen!
