The Love Affair That Changed My Life

by Sherita Thompson

Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” Psalm 127:3

It is no secret that my children mean the
world to me. The love my heart feels whenever I see them or hold them is
something I cannot put into words. It is
truly an honor to be their mother, and I
thank God every day when I wake up
and see them. Some days I still cannot
believe that I am a mom, and I get tearful
just thinking about how blessed I am to
have them in my life. I do not take for
granted this privilege God has blessed
me with.

God, I want to take this opportunity to thank You for my children. I know being their mother is the highest calling of my life, so please help me to treat them with love and respect. Please help me to NEVER become discouraged in my work as a mom. Lord, please give me the strength to talk to and pray with them EVERY DAY. Lord, please help me to teach them of Your everlasting love, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Please guide my teachings because my only desire is that Your Word will abide in their hearts all the days of their lives.

I admire the love that Josiah has for his brother and sister. He will take a spanking in James’s place in a heartbeat. He gets so worked up whenever James is too rough with Jade, only to turn around and do the same thing. I am guessing he thinks it’s okay if he does it. I love how they love to cuddle with each other. I love how openly affectionate they are with each other. And I love how Josiah always wants to help feed Jade. He is so eager to teach them everything he knows. I love how forgiving James is. He is my calm baby, and the first to say, “I am sorry” if he offends you. I love how he hates when the doors are left open or things are out of place, just like his Mommy. I love how he will wait his turn and the fact that there isn’t much that bothers him. Jade just sits around and watches her brothers all day. She wants to play with them and is often found in the middle of everything they are doing.

God, I thank You for the blessings of my children. They are all precious gifts from You. I thank You for them as individuals, and I thank You for them as a unit. I pray that their love for each other will remain strong, as they grow older. I pray that the bond between them will strengthen from day to day. Lord, I ask You to bless their relationships with each other. Please help them to always appreciate each other’s strengths and differences, never getting frustrated, but learning from those differences. I pray that they will be good role models for each other. I sincerely pray that as they become independent, mature individuals, if one should ever leave the “fold” of God’s family, that they will pray him/her back to You, never judging or condemning. I pray that You give them the understanding to appreciate the gift of each other. Lord, I pray for Your hands of protection to be over their lives always and forever.

I love spending quality time with them. I love cooking and baking with them. They have so much fun in the kitchen with me. I love the sounds of their laughter and screams, even though the screams drive me insane some days. I love taking them to the park or outside just for a walk. I love when they say to me: “I love you, Mommy.” It melts my heart and blesses my soul. But I especially love when they wrap their little arms around my leg or neck and give me sweet kisses. Oh, what joy it is to know your precious little ones love you. They hate to see me sad. They try to comfort me whenever I am disappointed by their behaviors. Their little apologies are so sincere that it breaks my heart to see them so sad. I love teaching them and we love learning new things together. We love to color and make messy hand prints, learn and solve new mathematical problems, learn about planets and their structures, learn all the different shapes and their angles, as well as learn new words. We especially love learning about different Bible characters. The story of David and Goliath is Josiah’s favorite, while Moses, the story about the baby in the basket, is James’s favorite. Jade loves to clap her hands and dance to the song “clap your tiny hands” otherwise, she just listens to the stories.

Lord, it is indeed a privilege for me to raise, teach, and train these children for Your kingdom. Thank You for entrusting their lives into my hands, and for this love affair that has changed my life forever. I know motherhood can be overwhelming and tiresome, so please help me to look to You for wisdom and strength whenever I get weary. Weariness isn’t burdensome, and I know that the children are not a burden, but are a blessing given to me by You. So Lord, I ask that You help me to always exercise patience in my interactions with them. You are my perfect example, so please help me to mirror Your character, and where I fall short, help me to seek Your guidance, courage, and strength.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

Note Briefly: Mommies, let us remember to enjoy this time with our little ones, because the time is fleeting and before you know it, they will be all grown up, so remember to enjoy all of life’s precious moments with them now.
